      Eligibility

    • Foreigners who intend to stay for more than 90 days from the date of entry into Korea

        • Tuberculosis screening for alien registration

        • According to the policy of the Ministry of Justice, 'Tuberculosis screening' became mandatory for all foreign students who wish to register as foreigners. (Effective from December 1, 2014)
        • 1. Applicable nationalities

        • Those who wish to apply for alien registration (D-2 status of residence) as an international student from a high-risk country for tuberculosis
        • Applicable countries: China, Cambodia, Myanmar, Philippines, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Mongolia, Indonesia, India, Nepal, Vietnam, Thailand, Russia, Malaysia, Uzbekistan, Sri Lanka
        • 2. When to submit the health checkup result

        • At the time of first-time alien registration (i.e., when applying for your first alien registration card)
        • Not required for visa extension
        • 3. How to get the checkup

        • Visit any nearby public health center

        • What to bring: passport, 1 ID photo (3X4cm), issuance fee 1,500 won

  • Extending your period of stay

      D-2 (study abroad) undergraduate/graduate students

      Eligibility

    • When it is required for you to stay in Korea for thesis preparation after successfully completing the master's or doctoral degree program
    • Extended period

    • Bachelor: Up to 6 years from the time of admission
    • Master's: Up to 6 years from the time of admission
    • PhD: Up to 8 years from the time of admission

  • Changing status of residence

      [For first-time admission] General training (D-4) → Study abroad (D-2)

    • You cannot change to ‘study abroad (D-2)’ visa within South Korea if you are holding the following visa: Pure and group tourism (C-3-2), medical tourism (C-3-3), general tourism (C-3-9), technical training (D-3), non-professional employment (E-9), seafarer employment Holders of (E-10) and other (G-1)
    • Required documents

    • D photo (if you wish to reissue your registration card)
      Since changing the status of residence to D-2 (Student) requires prior permission based on Article 24 of the Immigration Control Act, the change from non-student status to study abroad status must be requested and approved in advance before the semester starts (Please note, every year, many become penalized for violating the Immigration Control Act).
      You cannot change to ‘study abroad (D-2)’ visa within South Korea if you are holding the following visa: Pure and group tourism (C-3-2), medical tourism (C-3-3), general tourism (C-3-9), technical training (D-3), non-professional employment (E-9), seafarer employment Holders of (E-10) and other (G-1) (To change the visa, you must leave and receive the visa outside South Korea)
    • [When conducting job search after graduation] Study abroad (D-2) → Change to job search (D-10)

      Eligibility

    • Those who have obtained a master’s, doctoral, or bachelor’s degree (average GPA of 2.5 or higher) in South Korea as a resident with a study abroad (D-2) visa, and wish to train or seek employment in a Korean company, etc.

      Eligibility

    • A person who has received a bachelor’s degree or higher from a Korean university and is recommended by the university president (dean)

    • Employment recommendation letter (mandatory for certain jobs) or employment utilization plan from the competent department

    • Fee 130,000 won
      You must apply in advance and obtain permission to change your status of residence before starting the work.
  • Part-time employment activity permit (part-time job)

      Eligibility

    • Those who have a certain level of Korean language proficiency, are committed to their study abroad, and are currently enrolled in a university, among those who have a D-2 (student) visa and has been verified by the international student department at their respective university
    • Those who are preparing a thesis after completing regular degree program (including master's and doctoral)
    • Applicants with a GPA of 2.0 or higher in the previous semester
    • Korean language proficiency standards: Year 1-2 students: TOPIK level 3 or higher / Year 3-4 and graduate students: TOPIK level 4 or higher
      If you fail to meet the required Korean language proficiency, you will only be permitted to work for ½ of the hours normally allowed.
    • Allowed working hours

    • During the semester, undergraduate students can work for up to 25 hours per week (Monday-Friday, and Master’s and Ph.D. students for up to 35 hours per week (Monday-Friday)
    • You can work at up to 2 places (workplace) including part-time jobs
    • However, there is no time limit in working hours during public holidays, Saturdays, Sundays, and school breaks.
    • Allowed areas of employment

    • Jobs that are believed to be closely related to your major
    • Occupations that are socially acceptable and appropriate for students
    • Interpretation/translation, food service, general office admin, etc.
    • Tourist information and sales assistance at duty-free shops, etc.
    • Activities such as store clerks, restaurant clerks, event assistants, etc. in English villages or English camps
    • Other simple labors outside employment-restricted fields
    • Private tutoring, manufacturing and construction are prohibited.
    • Penalties for violating Part-time Employment Regulations

    • If you are employed without obtaining relevant permission: both the employee and employer will be penalized (1st time: the employee will lose eligibility for part-time work for 1 year and employer be fined, 2nd-time: the employee will be deported) However, in the case of unapproved employment in the construction industry, regardless of the number of violations, departure will be ordered within 30 days without exception.
    • Violation of permit requirements (applicants who have not reported changes in working hours, place of work, etc.): 1st-time violation: No part-time job for 1 year, 2nd-time: No part-time job during study abroad, 3rd-time: Cancellation of study abroad qualifications

      o In the case of a business registration certificate that includes manufacturing business, additionally submit a ‘certificate of compliance with the part-time employment requirements’ and a copy of the employer’s ID

    • How to apply

    • Before starting work, visit the immigration office in person or apply through an online civil service application (www.hikorea.go.kr)
    • In case of changing the place of employment (time), apply directly to the immigration office or through online civil petition (www.hikorea.go.kr) within 15 days from the date of change (www.hikorea.go.kr)
    • Exemption from part-time work permit

    • Within the scope that does not infringe on the essence of study abroad qualifications, activities performed with one-off compensation, prize money, or other general remuneration are exempted from the requirement of permission.
        • Examples of permission exemptions

          1. When an international student receives a certain amount of allowance for participating in an internship or research project for course credit, etc.

        • The internship must be linked to acquisition of credits. Receiving allowances from the relevant institution is allowed, but internships in the form of employment before graduation are not permitted and are not applicable to the part-time work permit.
        • Research projects do not need to be reported if and only if the university that is linked to the course credit pays allowances. However, if profits are generated from project participation that is not related to any credit acquisition, it must be reported as part-time employment and it is in violation of the regulations if you make profit from participating in a project outside the university.
        • Participation in a research project is strictly limited to activities such as obtaining credits and writing a thesis within the university under the supervision of an advisor (even if participating with an advisor, permission is required if the project is managed by an institution other than the university), and part-time employment permit is required in case of participating in a research project conducted by an organization outside the university

        • 2. Receiving an allowance from the school as a working scholarship student such as a teaching assistant (including class assistant) or librarian in the school you are studying at.

          3. Receiving compensation or other remuneration according to temporary daily housework assistance or office assistance, etc. that are not performed professionally, such as housekeeping.

          4. When receiving remuneration for advice/appraisal, participation in events, temporary (one-time and non-continuous) appearances in movies or broadcast shows, not as a professionally performer, and other similar activities.

        • The head of the office comprehensively considers the type of activity, remuneration, period, etc., and decides whether or not to give permission.
  • Change of place of stay (address)

    • When a registered foreigner changes his/her place of stay, he/she must report the change of place of stay to the city/gun/gu office or the immigration office (branch office) having jurisdiction over the new place of stay within 14 days from the date of moving in.

  • International student group visa application

    • Overview: Group application for foreign student registration and extension of period of stay, etc.
    • Eligibility: International students who are currently enrolled in or completed Dongguk University's degree program
    • Application period: March/September (subject to change depending on the situation, check Dongguk University notice)
